Laptop Graphics Repair

If you’re reading this then the chances are you’ve witnessed or experienced one of the infamous graphics card/motherboard problems with a laptop — normally with nVidia Graphics Chips and most commonly HP DV Series laptops.

What are the symptoms?

Laptop powering on but not booting? Stuck on a black screen? Faulty nVidia chip? HP DV blue lights flashing?
If so, you’ve probably had this problem.

What causes the problem?

The problem is caused by a defective/inadequate design of the laptop motherboard & graphics chip — most of the time being nVidia graphics chips (but not exclusively). The problem with the design is that the laptop, and thus the graphics chip, gets far too hot. This heat then actually melts some of the solder of the graphics chip (technicial: damages the ball grid array of the graphics chip from heat). Once the damaged solder sets again, it sets wrong.

Which laptops are affected?

The most commonly affected laptops are the HP DV Series laptops — and the Compaq equivalents (HP bought Compaq). Affected laptops include:

  • HP DV2000 Series
  • HP DV6000 Series (VERY common)
  • HP DV9000 Series (VERY common)
  • HP DV5 Series
  • HP G6000 Series
  • HP G70 Series
  • HP TX1000 Series
  • HP TX2000 Series
  • Compaq C700 Series
  • Toshiba Qosmio
  • Gateway W340UA
  • Sony Vaio
  • Dell XPS
  • Acer Gemstones
  • Acer Aspire 5920G
  • - a lot of Acer laptops
  • nVidia GeForce 8600M GS

I have the problem, what do I do now?

Normally you would have to get your motherboard or graphics card replaced at costs of around £200, or more for some brands.
Some laptops have independant graphics cards whereas some have an on-board graphics chip.

Not anymore. Due to our advanced repair procedures, we can correct the problem without changing your motherboard or graphics card. The best part? It’s MUCH cheaper.

To get started, get in contact with us. Feel free to use the contact form, ring us or pop into our shop. We’ll give you a quote, a time frame and the percentage of chances that we can fix it.

How much does it cost?

The big question. Well, unfortunately it’s not like popping some extra RAM in. It’s an advanced repair that differs per brand, per laptop and per specific problem.

This means that we can’t give an exact price here and that you will have to get in touch for a quote.

We will say, however, that the average price of DV9000 motherboard/graphics card repairs (as described above) come in at around £60 + VAT.

What if it doesn’t work? Do I still pay?

If it doesn’t work, the only charges occurred are our minimum labour fee of £15 and Postage Costs.

What do you need?

We would normally ask for the complete laptop so we can verify & test the repair to make sure it’s working OK. Stocking every single type of screen, keyboard etc is not really feasible.

This doesn’t mean we NEED the laptop, it’s just preferred. If you’re a technician yourself then we’re also happy to receive & repair just the motherboard/graphics card.
