Laptop Getting Hot or Burning
If you laptop’s getting too hot, turning off then it’s time for a checkup. The chances are that you need to get your fan & heatsink cleaned and have the thermal compound (thermal paste, thermal grease) replaced. If you don’t then you’ll end up damaging your laptop.
Do I really need it done?
Common damage done by overheating laptops is faulty GPU chips, graphics cards, hard drives (Yep! Very common), RAM, wifi cards or even the motherboard.
Laptop fan & heatsink cleans don’t cost that much, they prevent damage to your laptop and also extend the laptop’s life.
How do I know if I need a fan clean?
Your laptop is way too hot and probably needs checking/cleaning out if you notice any of the following:
- Laptop burning your legs (or more!)
- Laptop hot to touch
- Poor airflow from the fan vent(s)
- Very hot air coming from fan vent(s)
- Burn marks on laptop
- Laptop switching off randomly (and normally again shortly after turning it back on)
How do I prevent this happening to my laptop?
You can take a few steps to prevent this happening to your laptop:
Don’t use your laptop on your bed, don’t use your laptop on carpet, in fact, don’t use your laptop on any soft material — cushions, pillows etc as this prevents the airflow to & from your laptop’s fan AND provides lots of dust which will end up clogging up your heatsink & fan.
Always use your laptop on a firm, flat surface i.e. a tray, table etc. Take a look at your laptop, you will notice it has small legs. These legs create a small gap between the bottom of the laptop and the surface you are using it on — this gap is to enable clean, cool air to pass freely through your laptop’s fan & heatsink.
If you use your laptop in the same place frequently, like a desk, then invest in a cooling pad. Cooling pads are for laptops to sit on when kept in the same place and raise the laptop off the surface more to enable a better airflow, and the better cooling pads have fans built in to provide more cooling power.
We sell some top-notch cooling pads at just £21. They raise the laptop a good distance from the desk, also providing a new typing & viewing angle. They have a built in fan which is powered by a USB cable to your laptop — eliminating the need for batteries or mains power. They fold away nicely for storage or transport. They have a grippy underneath to prevent the pad from slipping. They rotate so you can still move your laptop even though the underneath is firmly gripping. They have clips to secure your laptop in place.
How much does it cost for a fan clean?
Laptop fan & heatsink cleans start at £35 and the average cost is just £45. Prices vary as some laptops are easier than others… and vice versa.
